Introduction
Colonial Metal Products, Inc. aided Glass Equipment Development (GED) in the Research and Development of the Intercept® IG Spacer System in the early 1990’s. Bill Thomas personally worked with the engineers at GED to help them come up with the steel product that would work effectively and efficiently on the Intercept® IG Spacer System. He even went to the extent of loading small coils of steel in the trunk of his car and hand delivering them to GED to run on their prototype line.
Colonial only uses 100% prime material specifically formulated for use in Intercept. All products supplied by Colonial are GED certified and recommended as well as registered with NFRC. Colonial supplies the below for use in Intercept.
- Warmetal Standard Tin Plate
- Warmetal Standard Tin Plate Blackline
- Warmetal Thin Tin
- Warmetal Thin Tin Blackline
- Warmetal Stainless Steel
- Warmetal Stainless Steel Blackline
Colonial carries the largest inventory in the industry of both master coil and slit to width finished size to support our customers ever changing demand. Colonial is the industry’s largest provider of the Tin Plate and Stainless Steel coil to window manufacturers in North America.
Let Colonial help you with all of your Intercept coil needs.

Galvanized
Products
Galvanized
Introduction
Galvanizing is the process of applying a protective coating to steel or iron. The coating is made primarily from zinc and is used to prevent the material from corroding. Galvanization is important because it provides long-lasting protection for steel products.
Galvanized material is most readily available in two different types of material coatings: Hot Dip Galvanized and Electro Galvanized. Colonial has the ability to supply and process both Hot Dip Galvanized as well as Electro Galvanized material.
Hot Dip Galvanized material is produced by running a substrate through a molten bath of zinc and other elements to provide a protective layer surrounding the base substrate.
Electro Galvanized material is produced by running a substrate through a tank that is filled with a solution of salt water and zinc. There is an electric current run through the tank and the zinc bonds to the substrate electrostatically.
Both Hot Dip Galvanized and Electro Galvanized materials are commonly used in Automotive, Building Products, Food and Beverage, Farm and Agriculture, and the Container Packaging industry just to name a few.

Pre Painted
Products
Pre Painted
Introduction
Colonial slits and supplies many different pre-painted materials. Whether you need Pre-paint in Galvanized, CR, Stainless Steel, or Aluminum give the team at Colonial a call.
Prepainted materials have increased in popularity as a means of eliminating the downstream post-painting process in many industries. The utilization of prepainted materials allows manufacturers the ability to use materials with a very high-quality painted surface in a wide array of colors and textures. It is also available with printed films to give effects such as woodgrain. The surface of a prepainted metal can be either very matte or high gloss, smooth, orange-peel, or embossed. Prepainted metals are available in all the usual steel and aluminum grades and alloys so you can balance formability, strength, and appearance in the final product.
Prepainted metal is the choice for sustainable design. Detailed independent life cycle assessment (LCA) has shown that the environmental impact of prepainted metal is less than that of post-paint metal across a wide range of impact categories. Prepainted metals are also easily recyclable.
Although the organic coatings used in coil coating are generally thinner than post-applied powders and films, they still give a better in-service performance. So, you use less paint which minimizes resource consumption and enables you to cut down or even eliminate maintenance and re-painting.
The continuous coil coating process gives the highest standards of quality assurance through coil-to-coil consistency and has significantly lower environmental emissions than batch or post-painting processes. The coil coating processes are operated in accordance with the latest national and European standards for VOC emissions and emissions to water; this environmental compliance means that prepainted metals are the materials of choice in a wide range of applications.
By utilizing prepainted metal in their process, manufacturers are able to eliminate their paint lines which are usually the major bottleneck in their operation. Capacity constraints are minimized, potentially improving ROCE.
The cost of complying with environmental regulations is significantly reduced, or even eliminated. The cost of the disposal of hazardous waste associated with the painting operation is also eliminated.
Benefits of prepainted metal over post-painted
The benefits of using prepainted metal over post-painted metal are:
- Economic – the use of prepainted metal enables manufacturers to increase profitability through improved process flows, waste reduction, and the elimination of costly processing steps e.g. paint spraying.
- Product performance – prepainted metals offer a range of high-quality surface finishes which are generally not available via post-painting. These finishes, coupled with their in-service performance, mean that prepainted metals offer designers and engineers a world-leading palette of materials.
- Simplified manufacturing processes and regulatory compliance – the coil coating process is tightly controlled and operated to the highest European standards. This means that fabricators do not need to deal with costly batch and post-painting processes and their associated environmental impact and cost of compliance.
- Sustainability – prepainted metals have a reduced impact across many impact categories including water consumption, terrestrial ecotoxicity, and global warming compared to post-painting. This has been independently verified and further details can be found on the LCA page.
Prepainted materials are used in some way across almost all manufacturing products and process today.

Stainless
Products
Stainless
Introduction
Wikipedia defines Stainless steel as an alloy of iron that is resistant to rusting and corrosion. It contains at least 11% chromium and may contain elements such as carbon, other nonmetals, and metals to obtain other desired properties. Stainless steel’s resistance to corrosion results from chromium, which forms a passive film that can protect the material and self-heal in the presence of oxygen. The resistance to corrosion and luster are used in many applications.
Colonial inventories and supplies many grades of Stainless Steel. Some of the various grades we inventory are below:
- 201
- 204
- 301
- 301si
- 304
- 304L
- 316
- 321
- 409
- 430
Currently, we supply Stainless Steel to industries such as Automotive, Building Products, Food and Beverage, as well as many others.
We also are able to process customer owned Stainless Steel.

Aluminum
Introduction
Colonial does not inventory or direct sell Aluminum; however, we currently process both bare and coated Aluminum Coil in thickness starting at 0.008”
Aluminum products go to market much differently than Carbon and Stainless Steel. Due to this, Colonial focuses on providing slitting services to various manufacturers, coating lines, as well as end users.
Though we do not directly sell the material, give us a call and we will be glad to put you in touch with one of our partners to help you get the material you need.
